hall of Fame: Bob Chaney
Induction January 28, 2012
Coles County Dragway USA has a long storied history with many great racers & tuners who’ve done battle on the famed 1/8 mile and this year’s inductee is just one of those. From humble beginnings at his home on Shelby Avenue in Mattoon as far back as the late 1950's, Bob Chaney was an avid racing enthusiast; speed parts shop owner, race car builder and fabricator. He worked out behind his house in a small garage first on his own cars, slingshot front engine dragsters, and then into the modern rear engine dragsters. He built his own cars and then started building cars for many of the racers in the area and beyond, many of which are still competing on tracks near and far. When he moved to his location on 19th street and opened Bob's Speed Parts and Major Muffler, his jig was always filled with some fresh pipe for someone’s new race car. Though his racing had slowed down over the years, Bob was still involved with the NHRA through the Safety Safari, working both Divisional and National events. The man was well respected throughout the entire racing community, and never met a person that he wouldn't help, and that he couldn't call a friend. The cars that he built have won track championships, big money races, and set track records all over the mid west. The only thing more superior then his craftsmanship was the kindness and respect that he both gave and earned. Though he left us too early, his family and legacy live on, and he is fondly missed by anyone who knew him.
